Marlon Martinez, charged with murder of Lindon BarrettBarrett, made a brief appearance in Long Beach Superior Court today, one of several upcoming pretrial hearings. Wearing a blue county inmate jumpsuit and handcuffs, Martinez remained behind a metal gate during the hearing. He previously pleaded not guilty to the crime.

Martinez has been held without bail since July, when police say they found him with Barrett’s car after the English and Black Studies professor was found dead in his downtown Long Beach loft. An autopsy found he had been strangled, and had a small amount of alcohol and marijuana in his system.

A popular professor who had taught at both UCI and Riverside was strangled to death in his apartment in July, according to autopsy results obtained today.

“Someone strangled him,” Lt. Larry Dietz of the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office said about the autopsy results for Lindon Barrett.

The man accused of murdering him is being held without bail in the sheriff’s Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles. Marlon Martinez, 20, has pleaded not guilty to the slaying.

The autopsy results were were delayed by toxicology screens and the degree of the body’s decomposition.

Barrett had alcohol and marijuana in his body at the time of his death, assistant chief coroner Ed Winter said.

Barrett, a popular professor of English and Black Studies who helped found UCI’s African American Studies Program and served as its director, recently took a job at UC Riverside.

He was found killed July 13 in his loft in downtown Long Beach, after a neighbor noticed an unpleasant smell.

Long Beach police say they tracked Barrett’s missing car to Martinez, 20, who was taken into custody and charged with murder.

UCI’s School of Humanities has established a scholarship in Barrett’s name, administered by the Program in African American Studies.

More on death of English Professor Lindon Barrett

July 16th, 2008, 4:26 pm by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

Orange County Register staff writer Marla Jo FisherThe autopsy was performed today by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office on the body of Lindon BarretMurdered English professor Lindon Barrett, UC Riverside faculty photot, 46, a popular professor of English and Black Studies who taught at UC Riverside and Irvine. I’m sorry to say that the pathologists have deferred their report until the results of a toxicology screen which can take eight to 10 weeks to complete. The Coroner’s Office has completed its preliminary investigative report, but they won’t release it until the autopsy results are completed. This is per coroner’s watch commander Lt. Fred Corral this afternoon.

Barrett was found dead, apparently murdered, in his downtown Long Beach apartment Sunday. Police arrested Marlon Martinez, 20, after they found him with Barrett’s black Lexus. He is scheduled to be arraigned on July 24.

I’m sorry I don’t have any more information. As soon as some is available, I will put it up.
