Anytime a student gets a grade that is less than what they were hoping for, they are often comforted by a fellow student who uses the phrase “Cs get degrees.” This refers to the fact that anyone can graduate and receive their degree as long as they have a 2.0 GPA. While some concentrations may require their students to maintain a higher GPA, for the most part, anyone can earn their degree by being “average.” I like this idea; it makes me feel better about my own lack of scholastic competence.
This philosophy does not agree with many students, mainly the ones who plan on attending Grad school, in which case GPA does matter, or those who live for the honor roll and the Dean’s list. I typically don’t like these people, the elitist students who spend every class period pontificating about how they already know the course material because they read three chapters ahead of everyone else.
