John Dean, the attorney who helped bring down the Nixon Administration when he cooperated with investigators looking into a political break-in at the Watergate complex, will give a talk titled, “Watergate: The Final Chapter,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11th, in Chapman University’s Sandhu Residence Center. The talk is free and open to the public and coincides with the recent re-release of “Blind Ambition,” Dean’s recollection of the Watergate affair in the 1970s. Dean, 71, also has written other books, including “Worse Than Watergate.” Although he worked for a conservative administration, he has since become a blunt critic of the conservative movement, especially during the presidency of George W. Bush and is a regular guest on Keith Olbermann’s liberal news show on MSNBC.

  • Mark Felt says:

John Dean was the source for all the information that I gave to Bob Woodward. None of the information came from FBI files. Just ask John. He and I worked together. He wanted to implicate others in the White House as being responsible for Watergate and I wanted to convince others that Acting FBI Director L. Patrick Gray was crooked by claiming he had all the information about Watergate. In reality, only John Dean had the information, not the FBI. John Dean was also the source that told me of the deliberate erasures on the tape.

This is news, John Dean speaks at Chapman. I think I will try to attend.

  • Mark Felt says:

The “Mark Felt” post was not a hoax. If you don’t believe, ask John these questions:

How did I as Deep Throat know that Hunt was involved in Watergate? (see ATPM, p.25)

LIddy told Dean at their 11:15 A.M. meeting on June 19, 1972, Dean told me (Deep Throat), and I told Woodward. The burglars didn’t tell me — they were in jail and weren’t talking. The burglars’ lookout, Baldwin, didn’t even know Hunt or Liddy’s real names.

How did I as Deep Throat know that the wiretap logs reached Mitchell’s aides? (see ATPM, p.72)

Strachan told Dean on June 19, 1972, Dean told me, and I told Woodward.

How did I as Deep Throat know about Hunt’s project to blackmail democratic contributors? (ATPM, p. 131)

Fielding obtained the Hunt notebooks from Hunt’s safe during the evening of June 19, 1972, Dean read the notebooks containing a description of the project, Dean told me about the project, and I told Woodward. Although Dean continually denied seeing the notebooks, Dean on Nov 2, 1973, suddenly reversed himself and admitted to prosecutors he had destroyed the Hunt notebooks. He said he had forgotten he had destroyed the evidence. Of course, he said he never read the Hunt notebooks — he just thumbed through them. Good one.

Please doublecheck all the above questions and answers. Also, check Dean’s Deep Throat books to see the answer Dean came up with. In reality, Dean used his search for Deep Throat publications to distance himself from me. Dean modified, misinterpreted, and restated my information in order to distance himself from me.

Ask me a hard question if you don’t believe me. Ask me about any specific information that I gave Woodward. Also, feel free to ask John. He also knows all the correct answers.

Ask me anything. Why do you think I retired from the FBI the day before Dean testified? I feared Dean would spill the beans.

  • I was referring to the fact that this isn’t the real Mark Felt. He died last year.
