OC college roundup: Sexual assault at Chapman

Here’s a roundup of stories in newspapers and websites published at Orange County colleges and universities.

panther1Reporter Martin Syjuco of the Chapman University Panther reports that, “A 20-year-old sophomore was arrested on a charge of committing a sex crime at the Sandhu Center on Tuesday, Sept. 29.” The student “is accused of groping a female student acquaintance for the purposes of sexual gratification’ while the two were hanging out at a room inside the Sandhu Center, said Sgt. Dan Adams, Orange Police Department public information officer.” (Full story).

Mary Platt, a spokeswoman for Chapman, says, “…the groping incident did occur as reported.”

Syjuco notes that, “This is the second time in as many weeks that an act of violence has happened at the Sandhu Center. On Sept. 20, senior Connor McGinn was assaulted by a group of students on the driveway leading into the building.”

Brandon Angel, who writes for the Daily Titan at Cal State Fullerton, reports that, “On Monday (Oct. 5) , former student and graduate of Cal State Fullerton’s business school, Adam Motiwala, 24, was injured during a deadly suicide attack at the United Nations food agency’s Pakistani headquarters. (Full story).

“There was a huge bang, and something hit me. I fell to the floor bleeding,” said Motiwala to the Associated Press.

“Motiwala, alumnus from the class of 2006, was a former president of the Muslim Students Association at CSUF. Motiwala was born in Orange, Calif. His parents, Abdul, 60, and Zahida,45, raised him in Diamond Bar.”

At UC Irvine, David Lumb, an editor at the New University, participated in a  UC student media interview with Mark Yudof, president of the UC. The reporters raised the question of whether Yudof supported keeping all 10 campuses open. Yudof said, “I envision keeping all the campuses. I thought it was outrageous when some faculty members advocated the shutdown of Merced. It just doesn’t save enough money and it does a disservice to the tens of thousands of students who attend those institutions.” (Complete interview).

coast-copyChristina Ramos of the Coast Report at Orange Coast College reported that, “Parking fines on campus are set to increase by $10 as early as Nov. 1 for the first time in more than a decade. (Full story).

Orange Coast College has the lowest parking fines in the region for community colleges, according to John Farmer, chief of campus safety. The increase is because the county courts are demanding more money from OCC parking fines, Farmer said.”
