Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel, the Holocaust survivor whose writing about Auschwitz and the state of other human rights issues have been praised throughout the world, will spend two days at Chapman University in Orange next spring as the featured speaker at fundraising events.
The 81-year-old Wiesel, who visited Chapman in April 2005 to helped dedicate the Samueli Holocaust Memorial Library, will help raise funds for Chapman’s Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education and the Stern Chair in Holocaust Education.
In a prepared statement, Marilyn Harran, who holds the Stern Chair, said, “It was a tremendous honor to have Professor Wiesel visit our campus once, and it is an even greater honor that he has chosen to return.”
We’ll provide ticket information as it becomes available.
Go Chapman!
Mr. Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor is raising money for Chapman? Perhaps he doesn’t know the university’s track record with Jewish students. Shame.

I urge people to reader Marla’s entire story. You’ll learn that it involves a dispute over a group that did not gain formal recognition as a Chapman fraternity. And not all of the group’s students were Jewish.
Gary, I was the advisor to the Chapman chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu. Of the 20 members, 19 were Jewish. The fact that all, some or none were Jewish is irrelevant. What is relevant is these young men were forbidden to assemble on campus, wear shirts with the name of the fraternity or create a Facebook page. This isn’t hearsay, this is fact and it was memorialized in a letter to the students.
The group that “Barry” is referring to was one of a bunch of fraternities that applied for recognition in a year when only one was authorized to be chosen. We all knew that up front. Almost all the groups included Jewish students. One group was finally chosen for recognition. The group thats raised all the crap was one of the many who didn’t make it.
To say it was because they were Jewish is bogus — and since they DO gather and meet on campus and wear their shirts and Chapman seems fine with it, they are actually treated as MORE special than all the other frats that got turned down. So they are actually getting more favors than anyone else. As unfair as that may seem. The other greeks are not too happy about the university bending over backward to suck up to this group. Maybe we should picket at the Weisel event and let OUR voices be heard.
That is not true. That group does wear their shirts and does assemble on campus. We see them all the time. In fact they seem to have more rights than any of the other fraternities that were turned down that year (there were a dozen of them). The fact that most of them were or were not Jewish, as this person is insinuating, has nothing to do with any of it. They tried out with a dozen other frats, and only one could be picked, and they have been complaining ever since that it wasn’t them.
The Jewish factor is irrelevant. Yes, this group was not chosen during the selection process to add a new fraternity and no one is disputing that fact. The issue is these students were forbidden to meet on campus, wear identifying t-shirts, etc. That is the issue and was a violation of their rights - there’s nothing more to this story. The reason Chapman seems “fine” with it is because it took the threat of a lawsuit to return the rights to these students and every student on the Chapman campus.
Hey Brother Pikes…You might be interested to learn that our Theta Psi chapter at Chapman fully supported the efforts of Sigma Alpha Mu and were disgusted by the way Chapman’s administration treated them. Shawn Hutcherson from our Memphis HQ wrote to Theta Psi president, Peter Pazmany the following:
“Pi Kappa Alpha will support and defend the rights of all fraternities to freely and independently colonize, recruit, affiliate and operate. Brother Pazmany, please show Pi Kappa Alpha’s support of open expansion, and our support of Sigma Alpha Mu’s recruitment efforts at Chapman University…”
Pike wasn’t the only Greek house to support Sigma Alpha Mu in their expansion efforts - they all did and provided letters to Chapman. The fact that Sigma Alpha Mu wasn’t selected is another issue. Like the previous posters have written, the issue is the men of Sigma Alpha Mu were stripped of their rights.
