UCI professor invents a way to make jet engines quieter

Orange County Register staff writer Marla Jo FisherGee, maybe they could have built an airport at El Toro, after all, and nobody would have cared.

A UCI engineering professor says he knows how to make jet engines much more quiet–an invention that could bring a blissful expression to the faces of everyone who lives or works within earshot of an airport. Prof. Dimitri Papamoschou has applied for a patent for his jet engine silencer, that works by splitting the airflow from a jet engine and propelling the noisiest part upward, away from earth.

The tests have been conducted at UCI’s Jet Aeroacoustic Facility, where small-scale jets simulate the conditions of fullsize engines.

Here’s his web page on the topic

Here’s his patent application.
